THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has commended churches and civil society organisations for the role they played during the harmonised elections.
In a statement Zec Chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba conveyed appreciation to various stakeholders for supporting the election period and promoting a peaceful election environment.
a�?The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would like to express its appreciation at the support rendered during the 2018 harmonised elections which were held on 30 July 2018. Civil society organisations and faith-based organisations played a collaborative role in voter education which also targeted the youth, women, people with disabilities and a wide spectrum of societya��s groupings in the interest of inclusivity,a�? said Justice Chigumba.
The Zec chairperson also commended the peaceful conduct exhibited by political parties and other stakeholders during the period.
a�?The Commission notes that its efforts alone would not have counted without the support of the stakeholders. Zec therefore extends its gratitude to political parties for their participation and peaceful campaign,a�? said Justice Chigumba.
The media was also commended for supporting the electoral process through provision of advertisement space and airtime.
Justice Chigumba said: a�?The electronic media provided advertisement space and free airtime to candidates so they could inform the electorate about their manifestos while the print media also carried informative voter education messages to enable the electorate to make decisions.a�?
The commissiona��s chairperson also extended gratitude to community stakeholders for availing infrastructure that was used by Zec officials as polling stations.
a�?It would not have been possible for the commission to conduct a smooth election without the support of various service providers. These include the owners of various facilities that were used for electoral activities be they schools, churches, open spaces and halls,a�? said Justice Chigumba.
She also commended the public for record turnout on the Election Day to exercise their right to vote.
a�?The commission is grateful to the electorate for turning out in large number on election day to exercise their voting right resulting in voter turnout of more than 80 percent,a�? added Justice Chigumba.
