Will strikers surpass 20-goal mark?

Sibhekisipho Fayayo
In recent years strikers in the Premier Soccer League have been goal shy but fans want to see more thrills and goals with goalkeepers visiting the nets more often but the question is; are they up to it?
The last we saw of 20 plus goals was when Norman Maroto was trailblazing in the 18 area forA Gunners FC with 21 goals in 2010.

He was the last of 20+ goal heroes since 2009 a year that belonged to Nyasha Mushekwi who banged 22 for Caps United.

Last yearas golden boot award joint winners Charles Sibanda and Kuda Musharu fell way short of the mark managing to only score 12 goals each.

In 2013 Tendai Ndoro who now plays for Orlando Pirates fell short off the mark when he banged 18 goals.

With the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League fast approaching the end, indications are that the eventual winner of the golden boot might also fail to score 20 goals.

Highlandersa Knox Mutizwa assumed the leading goal scoreras position last weekend when he grabbed a hat trick against How Mine in their 5-1 demolition of the Gold Miners taking his tally to nine.

All along it had been Chicken Innas Edmore Chirambadare who was the leading scorer with eight goals.

What is of major concern is the fact that Chirambadareas eighth goal came in week 13 against Chapungu at Ascot Stadium.

After a promising start to his debut premier league season which saw him score eight goals in 13 matches, Chirambadare has gone on a dry spell of six games without scoring a goal.

His last goal came early in June when he scoredA in his teamas 2-1win against Chapungu at Ascot Stadium with the other goal coming from Captain Danny Phiri.

Only ten matches now remain before the season concludes yet the leading scorer tops the charts with only ten goals.

Highlanders coach Bongani Mafu has been quoted bemoaning the countryas failure to produce a killer striker.

a?We have discovered that Knox can also play well as a striker. He greatly reads Obadiahas type of play. Iam sure our young striker Thomas Chideu has learnt a lot from Knox,a?

Modern strikers are finding it tough to emulate players like Zambian import Chewe Mulenga who netted 24 goals in 1999 for Railstars.

However, the only glimmer of hope lies in the fact that the now leading scorer Mutizwa has only played 12 games.

Actually, a fierce battle for the golden boot looms as it is not Mutizwa and Chirambadare in the reckoning for the award.A ZPC Karibaas Raphael Manuvire, FC Platinumas Brian Muzondiwa, How Mineas Timothy January and Triangleas Lameck Nhamo are all in the race as they are on six goals each.

Evans Chikwaikwai is regarded as one of the most prolific strikers since 2000 after scoring 23 goals for Njube Sundowns in 2008. Other players who have surpassed the 20 goal mark include Zenzo Moyo of Highlanders and Nyasha Mushekwi of Caps United who scored 22 goals each in 2001 and 2009.
