Victoria Falls teams close ranks

ITaS often said that football is a universal language that unites people from different cultures and Victoria Falls-based Mosi Rovers FC is doing just that in communities that call the resort town, affectionately known as Mosi oa Tunya, home.

Just last season Victoria Falls boasted of three teams in the Zifa Southern Region a Amagagasi, Victoria Falls Tigers and Mosi Rovers.

But as fate would have it Amagagasi and Victoria Falls Tigers were relegated, leaving Mosi Rovers to slug it out with 17 other teams in the 2018 season.

Yet instead of bragging that they are the only team left in Victoria Falls playing Division One football in the country, the Mosi Rovers leadership wants the team to be a unifier in the community.

a?As a starting point we asked officials from Amagagasi and Victoria Falls Tigers to join hands with us as we carry the torch in representing Victoria Falls in Division One football. Football must be used to unite our communities and at Mosi Rovers we strive to be more than just a soccer team,a? said club secretary general Mduduzi Dlodlo.

The club is a community owned entity whose leadership is voted into office by the community.

But being a community owned club does come with its set of problems, especially financially.

a?We donat have a principal corporate sponsor to cater for our financial needs but one or two companies who chip in with fuel and meals for the players on match days. We are lucky to own a bus as it lessens the financial burden of hiring transport when playing away in Bulawayo and other towns,a? he said.

Mosi Rovers are playing in their second season of the Zimbabwean second tier league.

Last year the team finished in 10th position.
