TWO drivers died on the spot in a horrific accident that involved a Zikhali Bus and a haulage truck at the 30km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway on Thursday morning.
The Zikhali Bus was traveling from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo while the haulage truck was heading the opposite direction.
The fatal accident which left 32 passengers critically injured and admitted at Mpilo Hospital occurred at around 4am.
Speaking to B-Metro at the accident scene, Superintendent Alice Muchena of Bulawayo Traffic Metropolitan Province said police were not at liberty to release the names of the deceased as their next of kin were yet to be informed.
She said the bus and the haulage truck were involved in a head-on collision.
a?We are yet to gather information on the two who passed on as their next of kin have not yet been informed. What we have now is that 25 passengers who were in Zikhali Bus were critically injured and were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital,a? said Superintendent Muchena.
Superintendent Muchena said the driver of the bus veered off the road to avoid a truck which was stationary in the middle of the road before colliding with an oncoming haulage truck which was heading to Victoria-Falls.
The driver of the truck, Evious Masuku, said his car had run out of fuel and stopped in the middle of the road.
a?My car ran out of fuel and stopped along the road. The driver of Zikhali Bus came speeding and tried to avoid hitting my car before he was involved in a head on collision with the haulage truck which was coming from the opposite direction,a? he said.
