IN a suspected case of food poisoning, a family from Gwatemba village in Filabusi, Matabeleland South, lost two of its members and four are battling for their lives in hospital.
The now deceased are twins Unathi and Onathi (3).
It is reported that the family members started experiencing severe stomach pains after drinking milk and unfortunately the twins passed away before they could be taken toA� the hospital.
The incident has left tongues wagging in Gwatemba as villagers are struggling to come to terms with what happened.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkosilathi Sibanda confirmed the incident.
a�?We are investigating a case whereby two family members died after drinking milk. Their bodies are at Filabusi hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
a�?The other four members including the father of the now deceased twins are admitted at hospital,a�? said Ass Insp Sibanda.
He revealed that investigations were still under way to ascertain the cause of the deaths.
A reliable source from the village said the tragic incident happened while their mother was away.
a�?Sinikiwe Dladla, the mother of the children, was away when her husband Khumbulani Moyo and children Unathi, Onathi, Mhlalisi, Mbonowenkosi and Muzomkhulu drank milk.
a�?After drinking it, they all started having stomach pains and as a result had runny tummies and were vomiting.a�?
When Dladla returned home, she got the shock of her life as everyone at her home had severe stomach pains and she alerted the neighbours.
a�?When they were still organising transport to rush them to hospital, the twins passed away and they swiftly took the other four members of the family to hospital.
a�?They were all admitted,a�? said the source.
While some neighbours rushed the other four to hospital, others reported the matter to the police who swiftly attended the scene.
The bodies of the now deceased are awaiting postmortem to help police in their investigations.
