A Gokwe man was fined two cows by a traditional court for assaulting his brotheras corpse until it bled, as a way of punishing him for committing suicide.
In an interview, Chief Chireya of Chireya area, in Gokwe confirmed the incident which he said took place last week.
He said he presided over a case at his traditional court involving Togarepi Mumaro who assaulted the body of his deceased younger brother.
a?I can confirm that I presided over a matter where a villager called Togarepi Mumaro assaulted his younger brotheras lifeless body until it bled sending mourners who were gathered scurrying for cover,a? said the chief.
a?I ordered him to pay two beasts for such a bizarre act,a? Chief Chireya said.
Mumaro told the court that he was angry at his younger brother for committing suicide.
Mumaro, the Chief said, also claimed that he almost lost his life in a car accident due to his brotheras immature decision.
Villagers, speaking on condition of anonymity, told B-Metro that Mumaroas brother a Claudius a allegedly committed suicide by taking a poisonous substance.
They said Claudiusas friends had lied to him saying that the police were keen on arresting him for allegedly stealing three cows.
a?Claudius had acquired three cows and no one knew where he got them from, which led to people suspecting that he had stolen them somewhere. Some friends decided to scare him by saying the police were keen on questioning him,a? said a villager.
While travelling to his younger brotheras funeral, the villagers said, Togarepi who is based in Harare was involved in a car accident on his way.
a?When he got home, Togarepi went wild and assaulted Claudiusas lifeless body until it bled which sent mourners who had gathered into panic mode.
a?For his weird behaviour, Togarepi was summoned to Chief Chireyaas traditional court. He told the court that his bizarre actions were triggered by his brotheras immature decision to take his own life. He said he was angry at him that he had killed himself and also angry at the fact that he almost lost his life as well in a car accident on his way from Harare.a?
