STIMULANTS are varied and each stimulant has its own adverse effect. Methamphetamine is one stimulant that has grown popular among our youths, to the extent that they have grown into being chemists and producing this substance either in their school science laboratories or their own backyard laboratories.

In Matabeleland South, Beitbridge to be precise, l found this drug to be the most favoured drug of choice to those that had reached tolerance to other substances of abuse and also had a high dependency on drugs. They call it a?a?domboaa a?a?glassieaa this coming from that they use a bulb glass to heat the substance which is mainly in a stone rock shape in form.

They say having smoked it they feel and see themselves in a different world and some go up to two days, not aware of their surroundings, body numb but mind taking them to fantasy world. They call it the cool smoke because of its effects.

Methamphetamine is a dangerous, lethal and unpredictable drug, it is a strong amphetamine drug class that excites the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) some after having the drug hallucinate and some have found themselves in mental states that need psychiatric hospital for them to recover and try and find themselves.

Methamphetamine is found in these common forms, either as a white odourless, bitter tasting powder that easily dissolves in water or clear large chunky crystals resembling rock candy and this is smoked. Also it found in small brightly coloured tablets.

This stimulant can be smoked snorted, injected or taken in orally and has some of these as its street names by its users; speed, glass, ice and poor manas cocaine.

Regardless of what method is used to consume the substance these are its physical effects, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, increased body temperature, increased rate of breathing, dilated pupils and tremors .

The psychological effects include the feelings of euphoria, increased nervousness, irritability, and or paranoia. The behavioural effects are violent and erratic behaviour, temporary hyper activity and increased energy.

Chronic abuse of methamphetamine produces a mental psychosis similar to schizophrenia a characterised by paranoia, picking at the skin, preoccupation with oneas thoughts, auditory and visual hallucinations, violent and erratic behaviours.

Tweaking is the most dangerous stage of a binge cycle in which the user has not slept for three to 15 days and the individual is irritable and paranoid, the tweaker has a high intense craving for more of the substance, however, no amount of dosage will help recreate the euphoric high. This is because methamphetamine is addictive and creates dependency and this has seen some having higher doses, leading to either going into a comma or death after excessive use.

When you see your child or the ones you love exhibiting these signs that is an indicator that help is needed.
