THE 2017 Soccer Stars of the Year selection will be held on 28 November at Harare’s Mandel Training Centre.

Among the players tipped to make into the Soccer Stars calendar are Chicken Inn’s trio of captain Moses Jackson, goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze and Innocent Muchaneka. Dynamos are most likely to have Cameroonian Christian Epoupa and their skipper Ocean Mushure on the list.

Leading league goal scorer, Dominic Chungwa and Devon Chafa are also tipped to be voted for alongside Bulawayo City’s captain Zibusiso “Mzimara” Sibanda who starred in the heart of defence for the Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu-coached side.

Highlanders Simon “Yola” Munawa and FC Platinum’s Hillary Bakacheza are deemed dark horses to grace the  Soccer Stars list.

Last year, the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League relaxed conditions of eligibility for selection in the Soccer Stars of the Year award as well as the other finalists who make the calendar.

League management said disciplinary issues will be dealt with under a points system.

A red card is worth two points while a yellow card carries a one-point penalty.

This means that for a player to be disqualified based on disciplinary issues, he would have picked 10 yellow cards or five reds during one season.

Two seasons ago, a player who accumulated six yellow cards or more or two red cards or more was deemed ineligible for selection for the awards.

However, the league management decided to have the disciplinary points relaxed following an outcry by the selection panel that the disciplinary measures were too stringent and were unfair, particularly for the defensive players.

A coach who is expelled from the technical area at least five times in the season will be deemed ineligible for the Coach of the Year award.

Any player or coach who is convicted by the Zimbabwe Football Association or relevant regulatory body of any doping or match-fixing offence shall be ineligible for selection.

The selection panel will still consist of the 32 club captains and coaches who will be joined by selected football writers, who beginning last year their votes were made public like what happens with the Ballon d’Or in Europe.

The Referee of the Year, first and second runner-up will be selected independently by the Zifa Referees Committee.

The Most Disciplined Team award will be given to the team with the least cumulative points at the end of the season.

This will be the total of the PSL disciplinary judgments or standing order fines points system, including the red and yellow cards disciplinary point’s criteria contained in these regulations.
