PETER Ndlovuas seven Cosafa Senior Men Challenge goals haul faces a Felix Badenhorst threat after the marauding Mbabane Swallows forward was named in eSwatini squad for the regional tournament which got underway in Polokwane this weekend.
ESwatini takes on Lesotho while Zimbabwe will take on the Group B winners in the quarter-finals set for this weekend.
Having been in the tournament for more than ten years Ndlovuas record had remained unchallenged despite the mercurial former Warriors captain having retired.
Badenhorst needs just a goal to equal Ndlovuas record.
This seems probable given that BadenhorstA scored important goals in his teamas domestic league.
Badenhorst cherishes scoring against the Warriors of Zimbabwe and probably at the Cosafa Senior Men Challenge at Polokwane, South Africa.
The Sihlangu Cosafa squad was announced on Friday and Badenhorst joined nine of his Swallows team mates in the squad. HisA inclusion was against expectations that the interim national team coach Anthony Mdluli would rest them as they are involved in the 2018 Total Caf Champions League.
In a brief response soon after his 60th minute goal resulted in Mbabane Swallowsa 2018 Total Caf Champions League Group D Match Day 2 1-0 win over CD Primeiro 1 de Agosto of Angola (the side that knocked out FC Platinum) played at Mavuso Sports Centre on Tuesday afternoon, the 2016 Cosafa Cup Golden Boot winner said prospects of going to the regional showcase reminded him of the goals against the Warriors.
a?The Cosafa bring lots of memories of my goals against Zimbabwe, especially the brace at the 2016 edition in Namibia. Itas like I have the scoring luck against them and would like to meet them in Cosafa,a? said Badenhorst.
His goal-scoring streak against the Warriors began on the 25th of March 2016 in the 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations Group L Match qualifier at Somhlolo National Sports Stadium when he out-jumped the static backline to tuck his powerful header past Tatenda Mukuruva after only three minutes of play.
The match finished 1-1 but the Warriors mauled Sihlangu 4-0 on the return leg on Easter Monday at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
Badenhorst was to add a brace three months later in Namibia at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on the 11th of June at the 2017 Cosafa edition.
He scored just after 16 minutes of play before the Warriorsa Obadiah Tarumbwa levelled matters in the 56th minute.
In the 65th minute, Sihlangu then under Harries Madze Bulungaas mentorship, were awarded a penalty and up stepped Badenhorst to convert to put the Swazis back in the lead only for Ronald Pfumbidzai to steal a point away with a 78th minute equaliser.
Badenhorst thus remains the only player to have scored thrice against the Warriors in a calendar year. He had a fruitless one-year stint at DRC outfit, AS Vita Club where he was team mate to Oscar Machapa before returning home.-@NoelMunzabwa
