The hip-hop world woke up to news on Saturday morning that Zimbabwe-born rapper Nadia Nakai had signed with South African rap heavyweight Cassper Nyovest.
The news spread like wildfire on social media, with Nyovest using the publicity it generated to release the first single by the new signee to his Family Tree imprint.
The song, titled Money Back, was released after the announcement by the Phumakima hit-maker that Family Tree had signed Nakai a month ago.
Nakai, equally known for her presence on the mic as well as for being one of the Mzansi music sceneas most desired women, has been one of the rising stars in the growing hip-hop scene south of the Limpopo in the last few years.
Ever since being featured in the smash hit Amantombazana remix by Cassper Nyovest and affiliate Ricky Rick, Nakaias star has been on the rise.
As the only female rapper in an all-star cast that included lyrical heavyweights, Kwesta, Kid X, Ginger Trill and OkMalumkoolkat, Nadia held her own and has been noted as one to watch ever since.
In an interview with B-Metro this week, Nakai said the move to Nyovestas Family Tree was something that had been in the pipeline for a while.
a?Itas a career decision and that is not something that you make on the spur of a moment. I was signed a month ago but this is something that has been on the cards for a while,a? she said.
Nakai said although her own reputation in the music scene had grown in the last few years, she had made the decision to join Nyovestas camp because she felt it would help her advance her career even further. Having already made a name for herself, she said, it was time to shift gears.
a?It felt like the right time to make this move. The move is a step in the right direction for me because having an established team pushing and rooting for me is the best thing for my career at this point,a? she said.
Nakai was full of gushing praise for her new boss Nyovest, who she said was an example for other young artistes with his quick rise and great musical output in a short space of time. Nakai will be the first female artiste under Nyovestas wing, with the rapper already having signed and mentored young rappers, Tshego and Gemini Major while rapidly rising rapper Nasty C has also seemingly been embraced by Nyovest after his rejection by bitter rival AKA.
a?He is a great artiste and there can be no better example to follow as an artiste. Just following his story and how much he has achieved in such a short space of time just gives you a measure of his work ethic and ambition as an artiste,a? she said.
Nakai, who is yet to release a full length album in her name, said she was working on her debut project, although the focus at the moment was on pushing her singles and building her name with fans.
