A TWENTYa��YEAR-OLD Masvingo man allegedly struck his father with an axe following a dispute over the decision to marry a second wife, police have confirmed.
Vengai Mutsauki of Village 27 under Chief Charumbira struck Cephas Mutsauki (40) once on the chin with an axe and he became unconscious.
Mutsauki died while being rushed to the hospital.
Masvingo provincial spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 11AM.
She said the suspect fled the scene after committing the crime but was arrested two days later after police had launched a manhunt.
a�?I can confirm receiving a report of murder involving a son and father. The son struck his father with an axe over his suggestion that he wanted to marry a second wife. The suspect was however, arrested and is assisting police with information,a�? said Chief Insp Mazula.
She said on the day in question while at home, Mutsauki fought his wife, Pauline Makosi (34) following a dispute over his suggestion that he wanted to marry a second wife.
Chief Insp Mazula said Ms Makosi screamed for help and this attracted Vengaia��s attention who rushed to the scene and tried to stop his father from attacking his mother.
Vengai intervened and attacked his father with fists before leaving home for a while. He then returned back home, armed with an axe which he used to strike Mutsauki on the chin, leaving him badly injured.
After committing the crime Vengai took to his heels, leaving his victim bleeding profusely from the injuries.
Ms Makosi rushed to inform other villagers who assisted her rush Mutsauki to Masvingo General Hospital for treatment but he died before reaching the hospital.
His body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for post mortem.
Chief Mazula appealed to members of the public to seek counselling when they have a misunderstanding rather than resort to violence.
