A BULAWAYO man is battling for his life in hospital after his cousin brother struck him with an axe on the head after failing to pay his $4 debt.

Thobani Mpala (21) lost his cool when Emmanuel Maphosa failed to pay back his money which he had borrowed.

He reportedly picked an axe which he used to strike Maphosa on the head before destroying a speaker worth $150.

Mpala appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Stephen Ndhlovu  facing charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and having sexual intercourse with a minor.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 12 December since the complainant is still admitted to hospital.

Prosecuting, Petros Shoko told the court that on 14 November at around 8pm, Mpala approached Maphosa demanding his $4 which he owed him.

“The accused became violent and produced an axe which he used to strike the complainant once on the head,” he said.

As if that was not enough punishment, he went on to destroy Maphosa’s Huawei speaker valued at $150.

A police report was made leading to Maphosa’s arrest and investigating officers discovered he was a wanted person with a pending case of July 2016 where he had sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl.

The matter was reported at Pumula police station and the girl was referred to hospital for medical examination. A doctor’s report was produced in court as exhibit.
