THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB), the organisers of the Old Mutual Nkulumane Fun Run, expect a huge turnout of over 500 participants for this yearas race scheduled for Sunday.

Registration has been open for over a week but BAB expects a last minute rush on registration deadline on Saturday at the Nkulumane Shopping Mall a the venue where the race will start and end.

Categories include the open race (10 kilometers), masters, juniors, veterans, grandmasters, wheelchair and the 5 kilometer free for all fun run that is not categorised.

To encourage people to participate, the first 100 students to register will get T-shirts while it is the same for the first 400 athletes to show an interest in taking part in the race.

a?Athletes have been registering at the Old Mutual and CABS offices in the city centre as well in Nkulumane but we expect a huge turnout on registration deadline at the Nkulumane Shopping Mall on Saturday which will be open from 8am to 4:30pm. The slow turn out during the course was to be expected as a result of work and school commitments by aspiring participants but we have no doubt that well over 500 participants will take part in this yearas edition,a? said BAB chairman Manuel Mpofu.

Elijah Mabhunu from Harare won the menas category, the main 10km race while Olivia Chitate also from the capital city was the womenas winner. The two each pocketed $1 000 for coming out tops. Seasoned athletes have taken part in the fun run because of the lucrative perks on offer for the main race.

Brought back to life in 2012 by Old Mutual Life Assurance Company the race is sanctioned by National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe through Bulawayo Athletics Board and is held under the International Associations of Athletics Federations rules and regulations.
