Giants lose points

BULAWAYO Basketball Association (BBA) log leaders Giants have been docked a point for violating the league’s transfer procedure by approaching a Southern Mavericks player and another from the Oilers to join them without the consent of the players’ parent clubs.

According to BBA secretary general Howard Phangwana, the rules and regulations of the league governing player transfers stipulate that when a club is interested in signing a player from another team, the buying team should approach the player’s parent club first before making a move on the individual player. Giants were found guilty of breaching the league’s transfer procedure.

“We lost a point after the association found us guilty of breaching the league’s rules and regulations as we acquired two players from the Mavericks and Oilers. We are not contesting the ruling,” said Giants coach Emmanuel Mukandi.

The players in question are Nqobile Nyathi from Mavericks and Joseph Johns from Oilers.

Explaining the league’s decision to dock a point from Giants, BBA secretary general Phangwana said:  “The transfer by Giants was not done according to the association’s transfer procedure. The transfer window was opened in December last year and is closing on January 24 in order to give the association enough time to submit the changes to the national mother body, Basketball Association of Zimbabwe (BAZ).”

Meanwhile, the BBA will come up with a committee whose sole mandate will be to organise upcoming tournaments.
