WHILE many music lovers only know him as a DJ and producer of some chart topping hits, Steven “DJ Stavo” Sanders is a man of many more talents, as, unknown to many he once tasted life as a player in the local Premier Soccer League.

The reputable businessman who runs a motel and night club in between his disc jockeying pastime had a dance in the Zifa Central Region Division One League. He did duty for the now defunct Chrome Stars and Midlands Cables.

“I once played for Chrome Stars when the club was both in the Division One and Premier Soccer League under the guidance of coach Bernard Zikhali. I played as a right winger but unfortunately I never had a goal under my belt.

However, I provided a number of assists,” said DJ Stavo.

He is a former footballer who passed through the able hands of former Warriors and Ziscosteel star player Paul Gundani when he turned out for Midlands Cables just before the turn of the new millennium.

In 1998, Dj Stavo (39) hung his boots and left for the United States of America (USA) on a cultural exchange programme that saw him represent Zimbabwe in hospitality.

The former Goldridge Primary School (Kwekwe) and Midlands Christian College (Gweru) pupil, says it was in the USA that music dribbled into his heart.

Simply put, he came back to the country after a one-year stint in America with an immense soft spot for music.

“I was in the States for a year and while I was there I started to develop an undying love for music. Here I am today as a renowned DJ and music producer,” he said.

DJ Stavo started producing music in 2011. He has worked with a lot of local artistes that include Ex-Q, Roki, Leonard Mapfumo, Cindy, Trevor Dongo, Mac Dee and John Falsetto. On the international scene, he has worked with Zeus and Cibil Nyte, both from Botswana.

He has also worked hand in glove with the late South Africa’s music legend Mandoza, Lolo and Shota.

DJ Stavo’s songs have dominated the local charts and also the regional stations in countries like Namibia and South Africa.

On Saturday, the former soccer player turned DJ cum businessman is set to add another feather in his cap. The DJ is set to tie the knot with his long time sweetheart Kudzai Alifa.
