Kaizer Chiefs registered their third win over Platinum Stars in the past two weeks, with a 2-0 Absa Premiership victory at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Wednesday evening.
First-half goals from Reneilwe Letsholonyane and George Lebese secured all three points for the Soweto giants who move to the top of the table with an unblemished record after four rounds of league fixtures.
Having conceded five goals over two legs in the MTN8 semi-finals, Dikwena head coach Allan Freese unexpectedly opted to play three up-front with Patrick Malokase, Lucky Nguzana and Ndumiso Mabena all included in the starting XI.
Meanwhile, Kingston Nkhatha and Siboniso Gaxa returned to starting line-up for the Amakhosi in the only two changes made by Stuart Baxter from the side that walloped Stars 3-0 in the second-leg MTN8 semi-final in Soweto on Sunday.
Chiefs opened the scoring through Letsholonyane in the 20th minute.
Great interplay between Lebese, Mandla Masango and a?Yeyea? opened the way for the latter who fired a crisp shot past Kabelo Dambe from the edge of the area to grab his second goal of the season.
Lebese doubled the Glamour Boysa lead in the 33rd minute. George Malulekaas attempted pass took a double deflection of Dikwena defenders before rolling into the path of the Chiefs winger who hit home from an acute angle.
Maluleka, who scored three times over two legs in Chiefs 5-0 aggregate win over Stars in the MTN8, went close in quick succession after the interval. First forcing Dambe into a good save from close range before testing the Botswana keeper at his near post moments later.
Stars looked a different outfit in the second half and were unfortunate not to capitalise on a string of chances around the hour mark with first Malokase and then Nguzana heading over when they should have at least hit the target.
Dikwena continued to push forward in search of what would be their first goal against Chiefs in three outings, with Itumeleng Khune producing a top-class save to deny second-half substitute Rhulani Manzini in stoppage time.
Chiefs subsequently move top with four wins from four. a SuperSport
