THE International Tennis Federation (ITF) U-14 tennis tournament commenced yesterday with players from all over Southern Africa battling it out at Bulawayoas Country club to improve their international tennis rankings.
The competition which started yesterday will be ending on 15 July.
Mozambique, Mauritius, Botswana, Swaziland, Botswana and the hosts Zimbabwe are the countries participating in the tourney.
a?Basically the idea behind organising the tournament is to develop tennis in Southern Africa. We want to produce players that will represent our continent at world level,a? said organiser of the tourney Tarirwa Chikunichawa.
The tourney is divided into two legs.
First three days will be the first leg of the tourney while the remaining four days will provide the players another opportunity to showcase themselves in the second leg.
Last month, four tennis players from Bulawayo competed at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit Features at the Harare Sports Club.
a?We discovered that our players lacked international exposure and as such we want to keep organising tournaments with our neighbouring countries so that our players get a clear picture of what competing at International level is like,a? said Chikunichawa.
The ITF menas circuit provided the entry level of professional tournaments enabling players to eventually reach higher level tournaments on the ATP World Tour.
It attracted players from all over the world with Old Mutual as one of the main sponsors.
Chikunichawa highlighted that they are now organising another tournament that will be played next month in the country.
