THE raging debate on who will ultimately take over at Bulawayo giants Highlanders Football Club could come to an end as early as the second week of January 2016 with revelations that Bosso have already sent a contract to Erol Akbay in the Netherlands.
Akbay, the much touted foreign coach to take charge at Bosso, is expected to be presented as the man at the helm in the new year according to his agent Danford Mutashu.
Highlanders took a festive break and the club will resume operations on 5 January.
The Dutchman is said to have considered a revised deal that will see his salary demands reduced considerably.
a?Highlanders sent Erol a contract last week on Thursday. We remain optimistic that a deal will be signed. It (deal) might not be the best that the coach was expecting but because he is excited to be part of the Highlanders family we expect him to sign the deal in a few days,a? said Mutashu.
Bosso chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede told journalists at a weekly press conference last week that outgoing care taker coach Amini-Soma Phiri would be considered for a role at the club if he is interested but definitely not that of head coach.
a?The contracts that both Amini and Cosmas Zulu signed clearly state that they took over on an interim basis. If Phiri so wishes to stay with the club then he will definitely be considered for another role. Both these gentlemen are Highlanders sons and there is always a place for them here,a? said Gumede.
Gumede also implored the club supporters to leave the decision to hire another coach ahead of Phiri to the executive.
a?If for any reason it happens that the new coach makes a boob, who will take the flak? Itas the executive of course, so people should let us make our decisions regarding the new coach,a? he said.
Gumede was, however, not available for comment on the Akbay deal. His phone went unanswered.
Phiri is attached to South African First National Division side Moroka Swallows at the invitation of head coach Ian Gorowa for a fortnight.
He has, however, made it clear that he will not be taking a role as assistant coach at Highlanders.
Six local coaches have submitted their CVs for the post of assistant coach but the club is yet to make a decision on the man to assist the eventual substantive coach.
