THE third edition of the Beitbridge Mayoras Half Marathon received a shot in the arm with the coming on board of sponsors a Sanctuary Insurance Company a to bankroll the 16 June race in the border town.

Since its inception in 2016, this yearas edition is the first to be bankrolled by a headline corporate partner.

A brainchild of the Beitbridge Town Council in conjunction with the Beitbridge Athletics Club, the Mayoras Half Marathon was mooted to raise awareness among the public on littering.

Beitbridge Town Council secretary Loud Ramakgapola explained:

a?With the large number of travellers that pass through the town on a daily basis littering has become a major problem and we hope to use the marathon to educate the public on the effects of littering.

a?As has become the norm since its inception in 2016, the Mayoras Half Marathon will be divided into a 21km and 12km race as well as a five kilometre fun race that is open to veterans and elderly citizens,a? said Ramakgapola.

According to a 2016 Government report a record 500 vehicles and 10 000 travellers pass through the Beitbridge border post on a daily basis.
Sanctuary Insurance Company official Dumisani Nyoni said the company decided to sponsor the marathon as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

a?The company started operating in Beitbridge in 2016 and we have received much support from the local community that we decided to reciprocate by sponsoring an event that is the heart and soul of the town.

a?Last year we sponsored the medals and trophies but this time around we decided to take up the main sponsorship slot,a? said Nyoni.
