FAILURE to observe road traffic regulations has landed a Beitbridge man in trouble with the law and was ordered to part ways with $100 for causing an accident which injured a passenger.
Kuzivakwashe Guri (27) employed by Zimra in Beitbridge pleaded not guilty to negligent driving when he appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso last week.
He was however, convicted due to overwhelming evidence and ordered to pay $100 fine (or spend 30 days in prison) for the offence.
Agreed facts are that on 20 April, Guri was driving a Nissan Blue Bird due north with one passenger on board along Masvingo-Beitbridge road.
On approaching the 31 km peg along the same road, Guri lost control of the vehicle and swerved on the lane of oncoming traffic. The vehicle then collided with an Audi A3 Sedan being driven by Washington Mapfaka.
Mapaka had two passengers and one passenger got injured. She sustained injuries on the right arm and both vehicles sustained extensive body damages.
It was further heard that on the day, the weather conditions were fair although the visibility was poor as it was an open road. The accident happened on a straight portion of the road.
The court heard that the accident happened because Guri failed to stop or act reasonably when collision seemed imminent, failed to keep his car under proper control and also travelled at a speed which was excessive in the circumstances. Tavonga Musina prosecuted.
