AXED Bulawayo City coach Amini Soma Phiri survived an initial a?plota? to fire him when he walked in on a club executive meeting that had been convened to replace him with his assistant Bekithemba Ndlovu, B-Metro Sport can reveal.
Phiri was fired earlier this week for failing to pull the team out of the deep murky waters of relegation.
But this publication is reliably informed that Phiri survived the first attempt to get rid of him last week when he a?gate crasheda? a meeting that had been hastily arranged to fire him.
a?Soma was at training with the team at Barbourfields and unbeknown to him the club executive had called a meeting that was also attended by SaMaNdlo (Ndlovu) so that plans to hire him as the head coach could be discussed,a? a reliable source at Bulawayo City told B-Metro Sport.
But an executive member sympathetic to Phiri let the cat out of the bag and tipped the former Highlanders gaffer.
a?A member of the executive phoned Soma and told him to leave the training session immediately and rush to the club offices at Tower Block as he was about to be fired and replaced with his assistant. When he got there he surprised everyone and the executive could not go ahead with their earlier decision to fire him,a? continued the source.
A week later Phiri is jobless.
He leaves Bulawayo City in the drop zone on 16th position with 15 points from 20 matches.
Phiri took over the team in May from former head coach Darlington Dodo who was booted out for a string of poor results.
The team is bankrolled by the Bulawayo City Council.
Club chairman Jerry Sibanda declined comment but instead referred B-Metro Sport questions to chief executive officer McKenzie Moyo who was said to be out of town and unreachable on his mobile phone.
