A Hwange-based soldier was arrested after he eloped with a Form Two girl to his brother’s home in Bulawayo where he stayed with the minor girl for 20 days while repeatedly having sexual intercourse with her.

For sex with the minor girl, the member of the Zimbabwe National Army Sheunesu Govero (26) was dragged before Hwange magistrate Sharon Rosimani to answer charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor.

He did not waste the court’s time when he pleaded guilty. He was convicted and sentenced to nine months imprisonment of which three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

A remainder of six months was further suspended on condition that he completes 315 hours of unpaid labour at Nechibondo Primary School.

The State, led by prosecutor Onias Nyathi, proved that sometime in June last year Govero proposed love to the 13-year-old girl and she accepted.

The court heard that on 10 January this year at around 10 pm the girl visited the accused at his home in Empumalanga suburb where they arranged to visit his brother in Bulawayo.

It is reported that the following day, Govero asked the complainant to have sexual intercourse with him and she agreed.

The court further heard that soon after the act the two lovebirds came to Bulawayo where they were staying at Govero’s brother’s home. During their stay in Bulawayo they were having sex on several occasions.

The girl reportedly left Hwange without notifying her parents until they heard through neighbours after some days that she had eloped with Govero to Bulawayo. The matter was reported to the police leading Govero’s arrest at his workplace after his return to Hwange.

The rescued girl was sent for medical examination to St Patrick’s Hospital and the medical report was used in court as an exhibit.
