A man from Nkayi’s Sikhobokhobo area allegedly gouged out a boy’s eyes and cut off his lips before throwing him into a dam for letting his uncle’s cattle graze on his maize field.
Sifelani Moyo’s heinous act came to light when his wife filed a police report about what he had done.
Jahana Mpofu, uncle of the deceased 10-year-old boy Hlalani Moyo told B-Metro that his nephew was killed in a manner similar to ritual murders.
“The owner of the maize field found cows grazing on his maize field and got angry. He beat my nephew before he gouged out his eyes and cut off his lips,” said Mpofu.
The Mpofu family got worried when their child went missing for an unusually long time.
They then launched a search for him which led them to foot prints that they traced to a dam where they found his body floating.
The alleged killer’s wife had already made a police report but her husband had gone into hiding together with their children whom he feared would face villagers’ wrath.
“Moyo took his children to another place after he had dumped the deceased into a dam. His wife reported the matter here. He is still at large,” said a police source.
Jahana Mpofu said the 10-year-old had a bright future ahead.
“He was a respectful and intelligent boy whom we had pinned our hopes on. We are also shocked why Moyo killed him in such a painful manner, he could have talked to us and we could have paid him his maize than to kill our son,” said Mpofu.
Efforts to get a comment from Matabeleland North acting police spokesperson Sergeant Namatirai Mashona were fruitless.
