Zimbo Shield scrapped, replaced with Under-21 Cup Tournament

THE Matabeleland Rugby Football Board (MRFB) has hit the ground running for the 2016 rugby calendar with an inaugural Under-21 Cup Tournament featuring four Bulawayo teams replacing the annual Zimbo Under-20 Shield.

The Zimbo Under-20 Shield has been taken off the calendar with indications on the ground pointing to a lack of funds to finance the season opener.

“Our intention was to kick start the season with the Zimbo Under-20 Tournament but due a number of reasons this didn’t happen but instead we have kicked off our season with the inaugural Under- 21 Cup Tournament,” said MRFB chairman Theo Weale.

The Under-21 Cup, a 15’s tournament, is financed by an anonymous sponsor according to the MRFB chairman and will be played in a league format.

“The sponsor would like to remain anonymous and we are glad they came on board to partner us for the cup tournament,” said Weale.

A winning team will garner four points, one bonus point for scoring more than four tries, one bonus point for finishing with a score seven or less and two points for a draw.

Local powerhouses Old Miltonians beat the Warriors 14- 6 in the first match of the Under-21 Cup Tournament played at the Hartsfield Rugby Grounds last Saturday.
