Three police officers were arrested last week on Thursday on a $5 fraud case.
The three constables are Chitaruka, Muzofa and Chimombe.
According to a police source the trio were on Traffic Law enforcement deployment at the 38 km peg along Bulawayo- Tsholotsho road.A The source said they were issued with a Z69J receipt book.
a?At 7.49pm on the day the trio arrested Edmore Mashini (42) and charged him under the Road Motor Transportation Act for mixing goods and passengers. For the said offence they forced him to pay a deposit fine of $10,a? said the source.
It is alleged Mashini obliged and paid a $10 fine to Constable Chataruka who plucked off the receipt without endorsing the $10 with a pen on the receipt book and gave Mashini a fake receipt.
Chataruka later on endorsed the $5 on the receipt book instead of $10.
After a tour of duty the trio handed over $50 to their boss and upon checking it tallied with the amount receipted in the receipt book.
It is said while on his way home Mashini realised that the receipt was forged, prompting him to report the matter to the police in Bulawayo.
That led to internal police investigations which led to the arrest of the trio on fraud allegations.
They are set to appear soon before a police disciplinary panel.
Efforts to get a comment from Matabeleland North police spokesperson Assistant inspector Eglon Nkala were fruitless.
